TPS
18 Jan 2010
The United States has granted Haitians living in the US as of January 12, 2010 Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. Haitians have 180 days for the initial filing. TPS status is typically granted where there are natural disasters, political unrest, or the country is considered unstable. The government makes the decision to allow persons from that country to remain for a specified period of time. The duration is terminated when the US determines that the country is safe for the return of its citizens. There can be extensions granted after the initial period. TPS does not grant those who qualify permanent residence. However, those who qualify can work legally and live in the United States for the duration of the TPS period.
The United States government has extended the filing date for Hatian TPS from July13, 2010 to January 18, 2011.
This notice announces that the Secretary of Homeland Security has extended the designation of El Salvador for temporary protected status (TPS) for 18 months from its current expiration date of 9/9/10 through 3/9/12. (75 FR 39556, 7/9/10).
